Writing Exercises

During lockdown in 2020, I ran a short blog series of different writing exercises I’ve used over the years – and I was lucky enough to get a few submissions from other writers, too. With their permission, I’ve repurposed that series into this page.

Writing exercises are always evolving and changing, and some work better than others for different people. I hope to expand on this list in the future, but I recommend trying them at different times – it’s really interesting to see how you and your writing grows and evolves by completing a task you’ve done before.

So, let’s get into it, shall we?

Freewriting

Picturesque inspiration

The senses task

One line at a time

Newsworthy

‘What if’ stories

Out of place

What happens next?

Set the scene

Using words

The interview

Changing the medium

Retelling a story

Do you have any other great writing exercises to share? Have you tried one from my list? I’d love to hear from you!
